Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC): Everything You Need to Know

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that has become increasingly popular in recent years. But what exactly is HHC and what are its properties? This article will answer all of your questions about HHC, from whether it is legal to whether it has medical benefits and how it is produced. We'll also explain the difference between HHC and other cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, whether it will show up on a drug test, and any potential side effects. WHAT IS HHC?

HHC, or hexahydrocannibinol, is a psychoactive cannabinoid. It's produced by the cannabis plant in trace amounts, making it a minor cannabinoid. The cannabis plant is known to produce over 200 different cannabinoids.

As a psychoactive cannabinoid, HHC has some of the same euphoric effects as THC. Many cannabis users say the HHC cannabinoid produces a clearer high and harder kick than THC.

IS HHC LEGAL?

It's complicated, but most experts agree that HHC is completely legal under current federal regulations put in place by the 2018 Farm Bill as long as it's derived from hemp and contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dried weight.

While some States like Colorado and Vermont have restricted cannabinoids like Delta-8 THC, as of April 2023, there are no states that have explicitly restricted HHC.

The States that view HHC as a threat to their sales in their legal cannabis markets are the most likely States to have bans on the increasingly popular cannabinoid.

WILL HHC SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST?

While many HHC users tout the cannabinoid's ability to help them pass a THC drug test, the only 100% certain way to ensure no THC cannabis is detected in a drug test is to abstain from all cannabinoids, including HHC, THC, and others, for at least 3 weeks before the expected test.

Research on the topic is limited to anecdotal evidence, a few passionate Redditors, and word of mouth among users.

Herb writers tell us more about how long HHC stays in the system in their in-depth article about the topic.

"Your body metabolizes 50% of the HHC you consumed 30 minutes after it kicks in. Another 25% disappears 30 minutes after the effects are gone. And the other 25% remains in traces for days."

Cannabinoids are stored in fat tissues and can remain in your system for days to 4-6 weeks after consumption. Factors that impact the length of time that cannabinoids remain in your body include the amount of consumption, metabolism, frequency of use, and personal sensitivity

TESTING HHC PRODUCTS

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of HHC brands currently sold on the market today with varying shapes, sizes, and product offerings.  While cannabis brands and states’ regulations for selling hemp derived products differ, all states require hemp-derived products to be tested by an independent third-party laboratory.  Test results are typically required to be posted on the label of the product.

At a minimum, states require hemp products to be tested and sold with a Certificate of Analysis for cannabinoid potency, or what is commonly referred to as a “COA.”  The COA will detail the cannabinoid potency of the HHC product being tested, either as a percentage of the total dry weight of the product or as milligrams per serving.  HHC products such as gummies are generally accompanied with a COA showing HHC as a percentage of the total dry weight of the product.  The COA for products such as HHC gummies show HHC as milligrams per serving.

Testing can be taken a step further with what is known as a full panel lab test, which tests for both cannabinoid potency and purity.  Full panel lab tests typically test for the following:

  • Cannabinoid potency;
  • Pesticides;
  • Residual solvents;
  • Heavy metals;
  • Microbials; and
  • Mycotoxins.

All of GramCo’s products are labeled with a Certificates of Analysis that can be found by scanning are QR code provided on each product.  To see an example of a full panel lab test, check out the test for GramCo’s Tropical Fruit Punch Gummies found here.

At GramCo, we require anyone who purchases or consumes our Delta 8 THC or HHC products to be 21 years of age or older.
